Stratas
This series centres around an iterative and evolving process by staining the raw canvas using a fluid medium. By viewing the multiple repetitive lines and tonal gradations, which eventually lead to a deep space of Nothingness/the Void, I hope to captivate the viewer’s attention, guiding them into contemplation or meditation.
…[I]n a work where there is “nothing,” or not much to see, like a …Ad Reinhardt, or Agnes Martin painting…the viewer has to slow down the mind and emotions to apprehend the work. The process is a gradual revelation similar to meditation. The work of art is a mental suspension, not a mental diversion.” (Levy M, 2006)
In the process of creating these Stratas, I have given voice to my materials, ‘to show how the non-human [can] take part in becomings, such as art, often understood as exclusively [made by] human[s]’. (Konturri KK, 2018.)
